Vic Nguyen: 3D artist interview
3D artist and arch-viz specialist Nguyen Thanh Vich, aka Vic Nguyen, shares many works that have won 3dtotal excellence awards, and talks about his inspirations and aspirations…
Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Nguyen Thanh Vich is my real name, but I am often better known by Vic Nguyen. I graduated from Hue Arts University, located in Hue City, Vietnam. At that time, I specialized in Fine Art. But because of my passion for specialized areas in architecture and interior design, I decided to chase it and have worked in these fields ever since, while I was studying in the third year of University. After I completed my degree, I worked for some design companies and gradually became enthused about 3D. In 2003, I officially decided to work as a freelance CG artist; until now I have owned the small company named Vicnguyen Design with my partners.
What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?
The latest project "Canada building," is the high-rise construction that is rebuilt with new designs in Canadian urban. The client required two camera positions right from the start. I tried my best to keep close to the current landscape as well as the assets of new building designs. It surprised me when the client was satisfied even with only the first drafts. While waiting for the official approvals or any new feedback, I felt inspired to attempt two more, different cameras using my personal aesthetics.
I tried to complete it quickly and sent it to the client as a special gift for this project's architect. Surprising things happened again; they accepted these two new experiments from me, because they felt so happy when the value of their architecture creation has shown up more and more through my feeling. And the happy ending happened when they paid for all four renders instead of only two as before. That's also why these two artworks appear in the same month on 3dtotal. It’s no coincidence when artworks bloom, always look to inspire.
Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?
Any CG artist around the world who wants to advance their work, also needs to improve to fulfill their destiny, either through their personal aesthetics, or with supported software such as Substance Designer, Marvelous Designer, 3ds Max, Quixel, V-Ray, Corona, ZBrush, Itoosoft, and GrowFX; so many necessary software.
Are you a member of any social media groups? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?
Yes, I am a member of many social media groups which relate to the CG field:
- VWArtclub group on Facebook
- Ronen Bekerman's archviz group
- Treddi Ytalia
I usually surf on all these mentioned groups every day.
What are your artistic ambitions?
In this instance, I don't need to use 50 words because the answer is quite simple. In the short term, I want as many people as possible to know about my name as it exists in the CG world. Yes, that's Vicnguyen, Vietnam.
Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?
The most inspiring artists for me are Bertrand Benoit, Peter Guthrie, and Marek Denko. They are simply heroes of the world architecture CG.
