Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Thiago

I'm an illustrator and concept artist working in the entertainment industry since 2015, specializing mostly in environment and key frame. I have done work for some studios such as 52 Animation, Cafundó Estúdio, Província Studio, Animaking, Wild Rose Studios, Tortuga, Ossian Studios, Funko Games, and others. I'm currently working as a 2D artist at Wondernaut Studio.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Thiago

I’ve been working in this project for 3 years until now. These characters came to me in 2017 and I did the first painting about those fellas in a personal journey. They are huge friends looking for self-knowleadge and improvement. On some level I think they are a picture of myself but I can’t explain with words so I decided to paint it. For this image I wanted to talk about time and how this is an important thing in our lives, and how this works in different ways for each one. In my process I always start with a quick research, after that a sketch, and then keep painting trying to find the soul of the art between ink and textures.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Thiago

I can say I always learn something new in all of my paintings. Sometimes it is a technique, other times it is something about how I think and feel about the subject I am working on. About this piece specificly I had a good struggle to find the right atmosphere that brings the playful mood I desired for this magic place

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Thiago

This is a good question and to be honest it is hard work. From time to time I am a little bit frustrated because I can’t produce personal stuff as much as I want because of the regular job with clients and studios. But my tip is to always take some notes about what you have in mind and push yourself when the first spark of creativity is born inside of you.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Thiago

My ambitions are changing all the time, day after day, and when I reach one of those I realize that I want something more. It is an infite cycle. Today I wish to sign onto some project as a visual developer. Something I can create the first visual ideas and bring all the universe to the table, with environments, character, creatures. Catch an embryonic idea and give life to this fantasy.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Thiago

I love Nathan Fowkes’ art because of the colors, lights, and especially because of the patience he puts in to all of his process to reach a smart and beautiful result in his pieces. Another one that I am looking at it daily is Reza Afshar. His shapes and brushworks are amazing and bring a lot of feeling into his art. But there are others that make me inspired like Vladimir Motsar, Kleiner Hai, Ismail Inceoglu, Amir Zand...

What can we expect to see from you next?

Thiago

I am always trying to improve my art skills and the ability to tell stories with my paintings. I need to finish the Mexicano and Totocito Project, two or three pieces more, I guess.  After that, I have a project in mind with a suspense mood and a hint of horror. Who knows?
