Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Gabriel

My name is Gabriel Bona, most people know me as Bona. I’m a 24-year-old 3D character artist from Curitiba, Brazil. I started studying 3D in 2016 but I’ve always been connected to art in many ways throughout my childhood, always close to video games, drawing and movies. As it may be a bit obvious, I’m a huge Blizzard fan, since I was 5-6 years old when I started playing Diablo as my first ever PC game. So yeah, I love PC games and art. Gladly I’ve found a way to unite both things, mostly thanks to the people that helped me and have supported me all this time. Especially my mom and my great friend Andre Castro, who has taught me the fundamentals of 3D character creation.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Gabriel

My total focus is on quality, if a piece is not better than the last one I don’t see why I should publish it in my portfolio, of course your portfolio is your presentation to companies and possible clients but you must be proud of your effort in becoming a better artist, always pushing forward and raising the bar, never settling for something lower than your standards, which should be sky high. Consistency is very important, but quality is much more important; there is no point in high productivity if you are doing the same thing, with the same quality, and not trying different things to raise your art level. Art is hard, if you are not suffering while working on yours, you are probably in your comfort zone.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Gabriel

Plain and simple, I want to be the best artist I can be, that is it. I want to inspire and innovate, show my effort through the smallest tasks and be able to work with highly motivated people in pursuit of greater things. Always bringing joy and knowledge to my peers, always staying open-minded and humble and understanding that this is a never-ending journey, and that we can learn from anything, either good or bad.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Gabriel

I have a few; Jonathan Fletcher, OccultArt, Vadim Bakhlychev, Fausto De Martini, Danilo Athayde, Glauco Longhi, and Rafael Grassetti. Those are my main inspirations, not only because I’m really inspired by their work but also because I know and worked with some of them and I really admire them as people, not only as an artist. There is no point in being a great artist if you are not equally great as a human.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Gabriel

More real-time characters, of my own design, always pushing the quality bar and never neglecting the technical aspects of the game art. In the long run I’ll be working at Blizzard, may it take the time it must, I’ll fail enough until I succeed. I do want to focus also on more consistency in publishing my stuff, as I scrap many things I work on because I don’t see them fitting into my portfolio.
