Thank you for sharing your journey so far with our readers. Let’s begin: please introduce yourself and let us know how long ago your journey started? What drew you to art? Any early influences?

Lee Seong

I'm Lee Song Hong, a lighting artist who works for an animation company called Millionvolt in Korea. Except for my college days, I've been on this path for about five years. I've liked video editing since I was a student. It started out as a simple hobby and I found this VFX industry in the process of finding something more interesting. The work itself is interesting for some reason, but I really liked the nature of this industry, where new things are constantly coming out and continuing to study. That's why I'm here, and I'm still enjoying my life.

What training or learning did you do in those beginning stages? Could you see your progression?

Lee Seong

There will be a process of looking at various tutorials to increase the tool's quality, but I don't think this industry is a big part of the tool industry. Tools are just tools, and the important thing is my eyes and hands. For training as a lighting artist, I learned about the importance of cinematography and applied it to my work process.

Rather than situations in computers, I learned the importance of actual lighting theory and process and studied many DPs. It's very different from what I see with human eyes, so I grew up outside, taking pictures, studying physical phenomena, and testing various compositions.

If you understand the situation in this industry where you don't need to use a lot of manpower as the tool develops, I hope you always realize that your eyes and senses are more important than any other moment, not the tool.

Which piece are you most proud of, and why?

Lee Seong

I've done a lot of personal work. Of course, some of them were rushed to the company's work, but some of them were carried out step by step as I planned. I have new challenges in almost every individual work. Snowgirl is a project that completes all those plans and challenges to some extent satisfactorily. Without SpinePro, I wanted to create an animation with 2D movement, and it was the first challenge to create detailed characters, and it was a project where I took care of FX from beginning to end. Because it's a project that solved all the challenges I've been planning, I can say that Snowgirl is the proudest project.

What advice would you give to any of our readers who are just beginning their journey now?

Lee Seong

It is included in the above content, but I hope you will keep this in mind while studying.

A tool is just a tool. New technologies are coming out and the current repetitive tasks are becoming very easy. This trend, as time goes by, requires a higher sense and discretion by the artist. Don't rely too much on the tool. I hope you develop your skills and recognize the flow of this industry so that you don't say, "Oh, I can't do it without this tool."

I hope you always think about the reason why you started this job. It may be for making money, but I think most of them have come into this industry because they want to make something. I hope you don't give up your mind and don't give up your desire to create no matter how much work you do.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Lee Seong

I will always try new things. It's not the way it's done, it's the way it's done, or it's done with a new style of work, and maybe with a new person. And I'm going to really enjoy the work and continue to create what I want to make. I hope you like my work and I'll come back with a bigger and more interesting project.
