Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Alexandre
My name is Alexandre Mougenot, I am 21 years old, I live in Antibes in the south of France, and I’m a fourth year student in CG animation at Mopa School (Supinfocom Arles). I would like to be a CG character and creature artist that specializes in ZBrush. I also love a lot of software like 3ds Max, Maya, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Ornatrix, V-Ray, and Photoshop .

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?
Alexandre
We had an exercise at school that was to fully reproduce an illustration that we liked. So, I modeled the Samuraï from the fantastic art of Hua Lu, the winner of the last ArtStation Challenge. This exercise helped me to discover a great workflow within ZBrush, and allowed me to work more neatly. Thanks to this workflow I sculpted the Little Gladiator faster with ZBrush, Maya, V-Ray, Ornatrix, Substance Painter, and Photoshop.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?
Alexandre
For the Little Gladiator, there were many challenges. The first was to sculpt a tiger in a cartoon style, and I had never done that before. It was very interesting because I learned a lot about the anatomy of a quadruped. Second was the posing, to get a good interaction between the both characters, and to give them life in one picture. And the bigger challenge was the fur on the tiger. It was the first time I tried to sculpt fur onto a character and I loved that. It’s inspired my new character which I will try to finish soon.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?
Alexandre
I have a website, and it’s always up-to-date. When I finish a project, I immediately post it. I think it’s very important to keep all the files clean for the demo-reel. Everything is ready for my portfolio at every moment.

What can we expect to see from you next?
Alexandre
I haven’t finished my studies yet, so I will realize a short film this year with a new team, and next I will work on my diploma film. During my free time I will sculpt a lot of characters with different challenges. And maybe, I will do collaboration with talented friends to improve ourselves.
