Model & texture a warm arch-viz interior using 3ds Max & Corona Render
Hello dear friends, I am Ankit Sagar. I live in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. I am a 3D arch-viz artist. Here I share the process behind one of my favorite works The Redesign. The great thing about this work is that it is very minimalistic and a beautiful color combination with simple design. I want to share my technical experience for how to achieve the realistic renderings with minimum complication. I hope it will help you to learn many things. I used 3ds Max, Corona Render, and Photoshop.
Initially I created a theme and design in my mind, and then pen down a list and rough design on paper. After that I searched many images as references on the internet and started on a minimalist design draft, keeping the beautiful color combinations in mind. I searched many reference images of furniture and accessories which would be suitable for my design.
Modeling has an important role in any realistic visualization because the more details in a model lead to a more realistic object. I downloaded the high detail models from 3D sky, design connected, dimensiva, evermotion, and Model+Model. I also modeled some furniture which was not available online, including some cabinets, shelves, wall, and so on, with high details and correct dimensions.
The next step was to place some good camera angles because a camera angle is the most important thing for a best composition. If we don't choose a good camera angle then a scene can become a disaster. Here I applied the rule of third in photography which is very useful for these types of compositions. My suggestion is that never work on lower FOV because it distorts the camera angle. Generally I use FOV 50-75mm (focal length 23-38) and it is ideal for any camera angle.
Lighting is also an important role in any type of composition whether it is an interior or an exterior scene. Both techniques are my favorite, with the default Corona Sun and the HDRI lighting. In this project I used a HDRI from a Peter Guthrie pack, and I used HDRI in color correction with desaturation to achieve a rich white color. I used Corona disk light for the ceiling spot light. The Corona Renderer has a benefit over V-Ray in that we don’t need to change so many settings. But I played with some settings in tone mapping to achieve good lighting and scene depth.
Texturing has its own important part to achieve realistic appearances too, and honestly speaking, it is not an easy process, but if you work with patience and diligence then you can achieve the realism. You have to be very keen about the finishes of every material, like wood, metal, glass, stones, and so on. And my advice is that do not use low res textures and highly saturated images and colors. Always try to use seamless texture images so that you can avoid the repetition. Do not use flat color reflection, always use some greyscale images for imperfection in reflections and roughness. I used Arroway, Siger Shader texture, and Texture heaven for hi-res texture images.
I never use too much post-production. I always try to do everything in 3ds Max with Corona, like color correction, color and white balance, and so on. Sometimes I use Photoshop to control the contrast and brightness, and a little bit of color correction of any particular object.
