Zoltan Miklosi

Graphic Artist and Multimedia Designer

Hungrian graphic artist Zoltan Miklosi talks about his Derek Stenning-inspired Astronaut gallery entry, recent challenges, and his love for Blender…

Zoltan's Profile

Adam

Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Zoltan

I’m Zoltan Miklosi from Budapest, Hungary. I was born in 1976 in Budapest and I still live here. At the moment I don’t have a permanent job, so I am free. When I was 24 I learned Foreign and Domestic Commerce at BGF College of Commerce, Catering and Tourism. At that time 3D was just a hobby for me. But now it is my passion. Some years later in 2005 I took DTP and graphic artist course at the Pentaschool. In 2014 I started another graphic artist and multimedia course which I finished in 2016. My official profession is graphic artist and multimedia designer according to my europass certification. Before I entered into the digital graphic world I was an athlete and competitor, working as a coach in a gym. When I was younger I wanted to do everything. In my free time, besides 3D, I like to create music with Fruity Loops, and I like to read comic books and books in any genre. I also walk in nature and watch movies. I have a lot of things to do...

Adam

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Zoltan

I saw some of Derek Stenning’s works on the internet. In my free time I like to surf on the net and view other’s pictures and photos; on one day I found his works. At first, I saw his Entartete Kunst works and I thought they were fantastic and genius. I immediately fell in love with his astronaut characters with huge helmets and floating orbs, with cables in an apocalyptic environment. Very sexy astronaut females and macho males are a very attractive theme for a graphic artist who also loves Boris Vallejo’s paintings and Alfons Mucha’s works.

Adam

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Zoltan

I think the most difficult part was to make the composition interesting, and setting the camera and lights properly. The astronaut was created in the traditional character modeling way. I mean I used two reference images, front and side view, using a male model. After that I dressed him up in a spacesuit. I studied some spacesuits on the internet and the final score is a mixture of them. I tried to do something similar to Derek Stenning’s Entartete Kunst works as a tribute image. I love his floating orbs with cables and his macho astronauts, so I thought I’d turn them into my style. The new thing, in this image for me, was the toon shader of the cycles render engine. I think it is a very powerful skill for Blender.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Zoltan

Without Blender I think I wouldn’t be a 3D graphic artist. Ton Roosendaal made me a 3D graphic artist with Blender. Besides Blender I use ZBrush and Photoshop mainly. For creating trees and other vegetation I use Onyx Tree 3D Plant Creator package which contains some standalone plant creators, simple to use. Earlier I used Xfrog for these aims. Previously I had to use 3ds Max in my work; in my personal projects I don’t use it, or Maya. In general, Blender, ZBrush, Photoshop and a plant generator is enough for my personal projects and for work. If you try Nlender you will fall in love with it.

Adam

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Zoltan

Basically I am changing my images on my website. If I have a bit of doubt how good one of my images is, I try to improve it or I recreate it. I make them up-to-date in that way or I create another version of that. Every image can be improved with adding or taking away parts or showing the scene from another view.

Adam

Are you a member of any social media groups? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

Zoltan

I am on the Facebook, Google+, 3Dartistonline.com, Pinterest, and Artstation, besides 3dtotal. If somebody likes one of my images that is a great honor to me and makes my day better. Earlier 3dtotal and 3D Artists published some of my articles and works. Some of my music can be listened to on Soundcloud. Once, a Japan magazine, CADesigner, published an interview with me in 2006. Anybody can find me on the internet if they want.

Adam

How important is the recognition of your peers?

Zoltan

I am not a “like” hunter. Of course I love when the public like one of my images and they express their attraction to my graphic style. That is a great respect for me and I am grateful to them. Most of my images are only for job seeking and my hobby (mainly) and only for introducing my graphic artist skills. Being in a high standard gallery like 3dtotal is a great honor to me.  A high standard webgallery reflects how good you are and it gives an answer to where you are in your profession. I am very proud of being in the 3dtotal gallery.

Adam

What are your artistic ambitions?

Zoltan

There isn’t a concrete, exact aim. What would be amazing would be to create a full cartoon like the 80s French movie “Lords of Time” with modern 3D technology, or Disney’s “Treasure Planet” movie. Or take part in creating a very good game as a leading graphic artist/art director. Or create music video clips. I am interested in any area where I can use my graphic artist skills.

Adam

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Zoltan

It is a very simple question for me. In the traditional arts I like to check out William Adolphe Bouguereau’s paintings. He painted very beautiful and sensitive girls in mythical environments. Besides him, I love Alfonse Mucha’s work for the same reasons. Salvadore Dali because of his strange, picture in picture style. The famous Spanish painter Boris Vallejo is also on my favorite artist list. Strong males with beautiful women in sci-fi and/or fantasy environments is always a popular theme for me.

In the digital graphic area I have four favorite artists, Steven Stahlberg (of course) is one of them – he always does something strange and attractive in his images. Pascal Blanche, of course, he is also on my list – his strange images inspire me. Derek Stenning (of course), and Soa Lee; I could list them further. The internet is full of amazingly talented graphic artists worth viewing

Adam

What can we expect to see from you next?

Zoltan

At the moment I would like to create a small notebook with my own small stories for my images. I plan that it will contain at least 30 images. Now I have created 20 of them. I would like to present my 3D and design skills across this project. Maybe it will be downloaded in PDF format and you can print it at home for anybody. Some of the images here are from this notebook as a preview (The Hover, The Invasion, The Eat’n Drink More Restaurant, The Planettrain).
