Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Yago

My name is Yago de Amorim Dias. I am 23 years old and work as a 3D generalist and character modeler. At the moment I am working as a freelancer for some studios and agencies. When I was 17, I got to know the 3D world and I have been studying in a self-taught way, and trying hard to be better. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Yago

In my last project I was inspired by a Cory Loftis concept. I modeled a high-poly sketch in ZBrush, trying to maintain the most pleasing shape possible. I used Maya to do retopology, the low-poly modeling and open UV maps. I returned to ZBrush to add the details of the modeling and make the base color. I exported everything to Maya to start the lighting and work on the shader. I made some textures in Substance Painter and rendered it using V-Ray.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Yago

In this project it was challenging to make the lighting and look development match. The hair was made with XGen, and it was cool to improve my skills using it. I used the substance to work the maps, to make the colors match well. I tried to do most of the work inside Maya, so I did not have much work to do in post-production, because I do not have much skill there.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Yago

I always try to be producing personal work when I have some free time. I believe it is the best way to evolve and show the kind of work I want to do for studies and agencies. I usually look for some references of illustrations and animations, and have artists as job references. Something that inspires me to do something new and challenging.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Yago

To continue studying and evolving my work of modeling and look development. To have the opportunity to work for companies like Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks, which have always inspired me and make the best animations in the world. To meet the amazing artists who work there and learn a lot from each one of them. And always to keep doing my best.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Yago

My favorite artists in 3D are Pedro Conti, Victor Hugo Queiros, and Dylan Ekren. I really appreciate their work, it inspires me a lot. The modeling style and look development work by them is on another level, I hope one day to reach that level of work. For 2D artists, the work of Cory Loftis, Dylan Ekren, and Gabriel Soares have illustration styles that I really like.
