Hi Vahid, good to catch up with you! What are you up to these days in the art world?

Vahid

Hello to you guys! I’m doing just fine and many thanks to the great 3dtotal team for this opportunity for having the interview. Recently I’ve been working as a freelancer for different people and companies, and I’ve started making tutorials in association with my friends at yiihuu.com.

Your portfolio shows signs of evolution over the years. What do you find yourself doing differently these days compared to your earlier work?

Vahid

Well, because I’ve worked more with different people and  handled different situations I have gained a little more experience compared to two or three years ago. As you already know, in our work we must work and learn over and over again, and be patient because there are obstacles and bumps along the way, so we must enjoy the process.

What do you think will be the next step in your evolution?

Vahid

I believe I will do more and learn more about the different angles and aspects of our industry. In my humble opinion, in order to make progress in our industry, learning only CG and 3D is not enough! We must learn how to find friends and manage clients, be friendly, sell ourselves more, all while learning CG if you are a personal designer or small company.

Absolutely the first key factor is being patient –once they start, everyone thinks because it is computer graphics it must be easy! But it’s not easy, so they must focus on the process, not the quick results

Which of your pieces is your favorite? And why?

Vahid

I modeled a beautiful concept by my great artist friend seunghee lee which was a lot of fun to model, and at the same time I was making a tutorial with it. It was a really nice experience for me and we made a tutorial with that which can be found here, which is a 63-hour ZBrush tutorial, and finished with BPR and Photoshop. The final tutorial can be found here.

What are three key things an aspiring character artist should know about the industry before starting out?

Vahid

Absolutely the first key factor is being patient – once they start, everyone thinks because it is computer graphics it must be easy! But it’s not easy, so they must focus on the process, not the quick results. Second is learning every single day, and setting deadlines and finishing projects. And third, beside CG, we need to achieve a good lifestyle and self-improvement techniques, and we need to commit to get better every day in terms of character development.

The online world isn’t everything, but it is definitely an essential resource for digital artists today. What bookmarks should new artists have set in their browsers for when the stylus is out of their hands?

Vahid

I think we need to check from time to time the basic resources and websites that have up-to-date pictures, tutorials, tips, and so on… sites that are relevant to our workflow and software. And artists could use some free apps and resources too such as Evernote to organize their plans. And we need to plan every day beforehand because the most important thing in our work is to stay focused, which is difficult because of today’s digital world .

How do you get into your “creative zone?” Is there a place, a time of day or anything else that gets your creative juices flowing?

Vahid

Yes, in the morning I do meditation for 10 minutes and after that I work out for 20 minutes, and after that I don’t think and I just work. And by 10 o’clock I answer my clients, students, and other emails. After, I go to take a walk to ease my mind and think about different ideas. And I have a chat with my friends and my family to boost my quality of life, and from time to time I go on small short vacations.
