Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Suman

Hello, I’m Suman Ghosh. I’m a character artist from India. I have been doing characters for the last ten years now. I started my career as a 3D freelancer in 2007. In 2009, I joined a 3D Animation company and my career as a character artist started. Since then, I have worked in different companies and created characters for animation talk shows, architectural walkthroughs, film VFX, television commercials, music albums, PC and mobile games, and 3D printing. In 2015, I started work on console games and have been working on AAA titles since then.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Suman

Well, the orc is a fascinating subject which I’ve always wanted to work on! After watching Lord of the Rings, I fell in love with this fantasy creature and always wanted to create an “unconquerable orc” someday. When I started working on it, I did a lot of research on orcs and found some cool artworks created by different artists. In particular, I was highly inspired by Wei Wang's and Nick Keller's illustrations. Their command on this subject is legendary! When my vision became clear on how I wanted to see my version, I started sculpting it in ZBrush.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Suman

The main challenge was to create something unique which could stand out from the many orc interpretations done by other artists. I visualized my orc to be heavy, armored, mighty, and unconquerable who had never tasted defeat in his life. He kept his victim’s body parts as a keepsake to remember each combat that he fought and conquered.

There were so many aspects that I learned while working on this project. It was quite a brainstorming effort to choose each element of his armor, selecting the body parts for his collection and deciding a suitable pose to reflect his weight, brutality, and conceit. Besides, sculpting a hand-forged metal feel for his armor was fun, and also a good learning experience.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Suman

I usually start with ZBrush for blocking out or concepting my characters. For modeling accessories, hard surface elements, retopology, UV, and baking, I prefer Maya mostly. For texturing, I prefer Substance Painter for generating different PBR maps of non-organic parts and ZBrush for skin textures. For real time renders, I mostly use Marmoset Toolbag and Unreal Engine. For high-poly renders, I use either Arnold for Maya or KeyShot.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Suman

I have always preferred realism as my main area of interest among other genres. So I want to create some hyperrealistic characters for some renowned AAA game titles in upcoming times. Besides, I have designed some character concepts for games which I also want to create in 3D for my portfolio soon!

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Suman

I am an art history geek and love old masters' artworks. Also, there are many modern artists in both traditional and digital mediums like Kris Costa, Alex Oliver, Rafael Grassetti, Glauco Longhi, Frank Tzeng, Baolong Zhang, and Ian Spriggs who inspire me everyday to push my limit further and further. The quality benchmark that they have set through their art is unparalleled.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Suman

I am working on a real-time zombie character now which I will publish on my social profiles soon. I also have a plan to share a detailed breakdown of it to discuss my thoughts behind it; my workflow, tools, and tricks.
