Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Souhayl

Let me first thank you guys for the interview and for reaching out. I'm Souhayl Ben Ali, a character artist from Tunisia. I model, sculpt, texture and shade characters and creatures for animation, games, cinematics, and 3D printing. I have been working both as a full-time and a freelance artist. In my free time, I enjoy creating personal artworks. I am continually focused on the singular goal of self-realization; becoming a better artist and a better person.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Souhayl

I just started sculpting to see where the flow would take me. I began with a sphere to block out the body, and then tried to work as simply as I could from the beginning. For the idea, it was an original concept; I wanted to create a furious warrior creature. I had a lot of inspiration from animals and the World of Warcraft movie.

Adam

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Souhayl

I usually use ZBrush for all my high-res meshes and sketching, Marvelous Designer for cloths, and Maya to setup my scene. I’ll use Arnold for lighting, shading and rendering. Sometimes I use Mari for project skin details, Unfold3D for UVs, and Substance Painter for texturing.

Adam

Are you a member of any social media groups? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

Souhayl

I’m on Facebook and following some groups like Ten Thousand Hours and Pixologic Central. Every single day, I am checking online galleries on ArtStation and 3dtotal, and enjoy seeing good work. With these groups and websites, I keep myself motivated and up-to-date with every new artwork and artist, and I also check interests whenever I need a reference.

Adam

What are your artistic ambitions?

Souhayl

My dream is to do characters for big movie/game companies. I really want to be one of the best character artists and share my knowledge with people because every artist needs to make his name in history.

Adam

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Souhayl

There are many digital artists that I love, but to name just a few of them:  For 2D: Russell Dongjun Lu, Antonio J. Manzanedo, and Dela Longfish. And then for 3D, I really admire the work of Kris Costa, Frank Tzeng, Adam Skutt, Rafael Grassetti and Mathieu Aerni.
