Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Park

Hi. My name is Hye Lin Park , I’m 24 years old and my nickname is Sterin. I am studying 3D modeling while living in Ansan, South Korea. I'm studying 3D characters using ZBrush and Maya! It's a lot of fun whenever I study. I usually enjoy viewing realistic characters, stylized characters, and hard-surface models.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Park

When I started modeling, I wanted to make a lovely girl character, so I looked for pictures of girl models on Pinterest and finally I found a pretty model, Kulakova Sonya. This model's loveliness gave me a great inspiration. Also I wanted to make a 3D character like this feel similar to my style. The person who always gives me advice suggested to give Lena freckles for more loveliness. Lena's quality improved when I added freckles in the look development stage.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Park

Lena is my first proper portfolio piece. It was a project to properly learn the process for making still shots of realistic CG characters from the beginning. The most interesting and impressive work was using Maya Xgen to make the hair. I used many guides to show hair shape. At first, it was so hard that I was embarrassed. The more I did it, the more fun it was, and the more hair curls came out, the more colorful and richer the art piece became. Many Maya users use Xgen and Ornatrix. If I have a chance next time, I want to learn Ornatrix to make fur.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Park

I work mainly with ZBrush and proceed with the second half of the work with Maya. The look-dev stage uses Substance Painter and Mari. For rendering I use Arnold for Maya. It's no exaggeration to say that I use ZBrush for about 80% of my work. For a modeler, it seems like a really important program.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Park

I only just finished my first personal work, but I always try to work more than 4 hours a day. I have a habit of modeling every day, so I try to do a little modeling and sculpting practice even if I don't have anything to do. And I'm always inspired by watching other amazing work pouring out of 3dtotal and Artstation. My work is not boring because we participate in study groups and give feedback to each other and work together.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Park

There are many! First of all, I would like to mention Kim A-Young who really influenced me. Kim A-Young's sculpting skills are amazing! I really like HALBAE and Graffiti Girl from Kim A-Young's works. HALBAE, in particular, was used as reference when working on Lena's hair.

Also, I want to mention Epo, and Intae Jang who overcame a boring time by sharing information generously and studying together. I like Epo's Snow girl and Retro works. I always check when they post up their work and look around their art.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Park

My dream is to have my name on the ending credits, participating on a famous movie. Or I want to participate in game cinematic, featuring great characters such as in League of Legends. If I have a chance to go into a company and try to work together and produce high quality work, it will be a really good experience and I think I will have the courage to do any work.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Park

Currently, I'm in the sculpting stage to show body muscle for my portfolio. If I have a chance, I would like to show my hard surface modeling. I'm struggling, but I'm sure I can get through it somehow. It will be uploaded on my social network soon.
