Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Oleg

Hi, everyone! My name is Oleg and I work as a 3D artist in Kharkiv for the Plarium game studio. Our studio creates a lot of mobile and social gaming projects such as RAID: Shadow Legends, Stormfall: Age of War, and Sparta: War of Empires. Before I started working in the gaming industry I had an opportunity to work in an animation studio called Animagrad. This work gave me a lot of experience and a solid understanding of computer graphics production. Now I use and try to multiply this experience by working on my daily tasks, which are mainly character creation. This process requires skills in various fields such as modeling, texturing, shading, rigging, cloth simulation, and so on.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Oleg

I don't think I can highlight a special process. It was a standard work task that was done in accordance with the concept from our 2D team. All work on Saracen warrior began with blocking, which should always be approved by my art director, so that we can be sure about the main proportions and mass ratios during further work. After that, there was the modeling process, and for it I most often used Maya and Marvelous Designer, and ZBrush was just an auxiliary program for me in this task. When I was pleased with the result, I proceeded to my favorite stage of work - surfacing and look development. I made all the textures in Substance Painter, and the final shaders and render were done using Arnold Render in Maya. After the approval of these stages I did a little post-processing, basically I try to achieve the result I need on the render, and in the post-processing I add only the necessary contrasts.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Oleg

Each work is a little challenge for me. I try to do it better than the previous one; it seems to me that this is the key to growth in any profession. Over time, I try to look at the works that I have already done and analyze what can be improved, and in the next works I experiment with these ideas. If we talk about the work Saracen warrior, then this character has many elements of armor, which consist of metal plates. All this armor should fit his body type and gesture, but at the same time, metal plates cannot look deformed. This was one of the main difficulties, which I paid a lot of attention to.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Oleg

Usually I'm wary of learning new software, especially if it's some kind of fundamental program that can replace Maya or ZBrush, but if it's a small software like R3DS Wrap or RizomUV that can make my life much easier dealing with retopology or UV, then I will definitely learn and use it.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Oleg

I think that the most useful thing, obviously, is to get a job that will allow you to work on a project/topic/style that is interesting to you. In this case your daily tasks become your personal challenge because you know that you will present it not only to your client or manager but also to the community through your web portfolio, and in this case you need to make every effort to do your job as well as you can.

Are you a member of any social media groups? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

Oleg

My social media subscriptions are generic. I have a lot of CG in my news feed, as well as some traditional drawings and drawing tutorials because I'm interested in this and I like to do it in my free time. Everything else is news, sport, and some entertainment content. I recently started watching Corridor Crew on YouTube. It might be interesting for those who want to know more about VFX production and filmmaking.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Oleg

I am a humble person in my ambitions. The only thing I'm sure of is that I need to improve my skills and artistic vision to become better in what I do. There are many artists with an amazing level of skill and stunning works that you can admire for a long time. But lately, I have become more interested in questions of the reason for the creation of works and their concept, rather than the execution technique. I like modern Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, I am interested in understanding why the artist makes such artistic decisions that sometimes may seem strange and shocking.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Oleg

Definitely I want to focus more on sculpting and game art. I am going to make simpler artworks in order to quickly develop skills that seem to me not good enough. Also my main goal is to develop my own design skills, rather than interpreting someone else's design into a 3D model, I think this skill will allow me to become more effective not only as a 3D artist but also as an artist in the general sense of this word.
