Mohammad Javadi: concept artist interview

Mohammad Javadi
Concept Artist
Tehran-based concept artist Mohammad Javadi shares some work from his sketchbook, and talks about his drawing influences…
Marisa
Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Mohammad
Hi, I’m Mohammad Javadi. I have been drawing for 10 years. I studied software engineering at university, but I soon found out that art was my most important priority. I taught myself using DVDs, books, and other training methods. At present I live in Tehran, working on some personal collections at the same time as freelancing in game and movie pre-productions.

Marisa
What inspired you to get into art? Who are your favorite artists?
Mohammad
Drawing was one of the best hobbies in my life. I wasn’t serious about it until I got an art book by the Russian painter Mikhail Vrubel and an extraordinary book by Burne Hogarth about anatomy drawing as gifts when I was young. It was a turning point in my life, and I become serious about art.

Marisa
Tell us about your drawings and the type of work you love to make.
Mohammad
Organic drawing and character design are my favorite subjects. That is why I spend a lot of time on figure drawing. I love to capture the feeling of movement, expression and personality in characters.

Marisa
What tools and materials do you use in your usual process?
Mohammad
I use carbon and graphite pencils, copier papers, and mechanical pencils, but I would also like to learn more digital techniques, and I want to work in traditional techniques like oil and watercolor painting and use them in concept art.

Marisa
What are your artistic ambitions?
Mohammad
I would love to grow my skills to show inexpressible emotions in my works, like the feelings and emotions of faces in John Singer Sargent’s paintings.
Marisa
What can we expect to see from you next? Any cool projects we should look out for?
Mohammad
Creating a comic book was always my fancy. I hope it will come true soon.
