Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Mehmet Mert

Hey! I'm Mert and I'm a self-taught character artist currently working as a facial modeler at Goodbye Kansas Studios, Stockholm. Whenever I'm not working on a character, I research new methods to improve my workflow, play video games, or play drums.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Mehmet Mert

For the last year, likeness projects became my obsession and I chose Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G as a way to thank him for all the laughs. The workflow is pretty straightforward and I'll be making a tutorial on Ali G soon so you will get a closer look into the process.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Mehmet Mert

The hardest part of the process was definitely getting the likeness correct. I've noticed that when you start noticing that you can't see anymore on likeness sculpts forcing yourself doesn't really work out, and sometimes you should give yourself time to refresh.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Mehmet Mert

On some projects, I like texturing with Substance Painter depending on if I'm working with UDIMs or not. I want to try sculpting with Mudbox since its camera helps a lot with aligning reference photographs with the model to get the likeness correct.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Mehmet Mert

I try to keep my portfolio up-to-date by doing my best to be productive, as much as I can, either working on personal projects or professional assignments. As a tip you shouldn't post work just for the sake of it and try learning from the project as much as you can.

Are you a member of any social media groups? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

Mehmet Mert

I'm a member of the Ten Thousand Hours Group on Facebook, I frequently check it to get inspired by great artists' works and sometimes get introduced to tutorials/new methods on creating characters.

What are your artistic ambitions and who are your favourite artists?

Mehmet Mert

I want to improve as an artist and develop an art style that incorporates better anatomical knowledge, motion, and hyperrealism. Scott Eaton, Ian Spriggs, Alessandro Baldasseroni, Mathieu Aerni, Marco Di Lucca, Brian Booth Craig, Phil Nguyen, Jonas Skoog and my great friend Arda Koyuncu are my favorite artists.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Mehmet Mert

I would love to work on another likeness project but it's hard to find time to work on personal projects and it takes ages to get them right, so I might be working on smaller projects that would take less time for me to complete.
