Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Kung

My name is Kung Yuan, and I was born in Taiwan. I like character creation and 3D animation. I always remember the first time I saw the movie Jurassic Park – the effects throughout the whole movie really shocked me. For this reason I wanted to know more about 3D. Until now, I still keep continuing to absorb and learn every day, just hoping to make better works.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Kung

First, I used ZBrush, modeling the high-poly model and topology, and then I input into 3ds Max for UV mapping. Second, I pasted the high-poly information back into the model in Substance Painter. Finally, I completed the rigging and rendering in 3ds Max. I like Keanu Reeves because of his personality and kindest heart, but of course, he played a cool killer in the movie John Wick. At the very beginning, I drew lots of sketches, but I thought that the picture should be more interesting. One morning, an idea just popped up: what if is he riding on a toy horse? A killer rides on a cute horse, increasing his sense of conflict. I immediately adopted this idea.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Kung

I hadn't learned to make hair and fabric very well, but this time I tried hard for the new hair material in V-Ray, because it is a new update that I spent time trying to understand the settings for, and I totally loved the results, I think they look pretty good. And for the fabrics, I used Marvelous Designer – this software really saves a lot of time when making clothes.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Kung

I always spend time learning software and drawing sketches every morning. We all know that when you learn the depths of each software, you will shorten the time each step takes – then you can take advantage of that extra time to do more details and make better works. The most important thing is to let the software complete the idea in your mind, not to let the software limit your creativity.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Kung

I’ve just started to make a music video, and I hope I can use all the experiences and skills I have learned before on it. I think this project will take around half a year or maybe more. It starts at zero, so I have to create storylines and all the characters, details, styles, and so on. I will upload to my website when the music video is complete, and I have to say this Taiwanese band is awesome! Let’s be patient for it and when that time comes, I hope you guys will like it.
