Kan Muftic is a London-based Animation Director and Concept Artist, currently working as one of directors on an upcoming Netflix show. His past credits include Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Godzilla, Edge of Tomorrow, and Batman Arkham Asylum. His first book, Figure Drawing for Concept Artists is available to pre-order now, and is a comprehensive guide for learning figure drawing techniques to aid every concept artist's skill set.

3dt: Congratulations on completing your book "Figure Drawing for Concept Artists" now available in our shop. What makes figure drawing so useful to concept artists?

Kan Muftic: For years Ive been told that its the most useful form of practice for any concept artist but I didnt understand why. I used to see the whole exercise as a chore. But with time, I learned that studying the human form isnt just about understanding human anatomy, but also (and perhaps even more so) about understanding shapes, forms, light, and design. On top of that, working with traditional materials really improves your dexterity, which is always useful.

3dt: What did you particularly enjoy creating for the book? What are you most proud of?
KM: This book is a product of pure love. I decided to take an informal, relaxed approach and write it as I would talk to my friends in the pub. There was no intention in advancing my career or making profit out of this just pure passion for the craft and desire to share it with others. Thats what Im most proud of.

3dt: What was the biggest challenge you faced with the book?
KM: Finding time to write and draw material was very challenging. My job is extremely demanding both in terms of my time and mental energy. In fact, I was the busiest Ive ever been in my life as I was making the book. But honestly, it never felt like a chore but rather a safe place to escape to.

3dt: What kind of helpful hints and tips can the reader expect to learn from your book? Can you give us a peak?
KM: While there certainly is a number of step-by-steps to help the reader improve their workflow, the most important aspect of this book is the actual approach to studying. It is incredible how much we hurt ourselves with preconceptions and anxiety. Aspiring artists are under enormous pressure from social media as they are constantly bombarded by countless tutorials, each contradicting the other. And they forget about themselves in the process. Im hoping to encourage the readers to take the journey within and experience the joy of fear-free creating.

3dt: What's next for you?
KM: Continuing to study, teach and direct. Somehow they all flow into each other, and I am very excited about my future.
