Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Julian

I am a graphic designer who loves concept art as well as teaching. My job is my passion. I have worked as a concept artist for the last 3 years in Vancouver, Canada in the VFX industry. As a concept artist my role is in the pre-production, at the beginning of the chain.

Basically, my job consists of interpreting the vision of the director of the film and to make different options about the shot, so, I must decide the composition, mood, and texture to show how it could look. Then I must work with different teams of the chain (modelers, lighting, and composition) to help with the correct way of rendering it.

I have had the opportunity to work on more than 22 movies during these 3 years in the industry, some of the last projects this year on which I worked were: The Mandalorian, Spider-man “Far From Home”, Pókemon Detective Pikachu, Mulan, Bloodshot, Lost in Space: Season II, and Carnival Raw.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Julian

The workflow that I used for this gallery was to make a sketch, and then put them in the Octane render software for the lighting, and finally, I did the render in Photoshop. As you know I can not share the art of pre-production projects that I have worked on in public, because it is not my propriety, this is the rule in all studios of the VFX industry. So, the art that you can see in the 3dtotal gallery is the personal exercises that I did training myself. I took inspiration from different sources, movies, other artists, and my environment.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Julian

The challenge was to look for more simplicity to communicate an idea and play with the lens of the camera, looking for the correct composition. You always need to play with the design rules and visual communication because you can make a beautiful mood, but if it has not a solid structure with design rules, the idea that you try to communicate can be confusing.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Julian

I use Photoshop as a base in my work, but I use ZBrush and Blender as tools for fast sketches, and then I added Octane Render to my workflow because it is very useful for finding good lighting, and it helps a lot with the composition.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Julian

As a concept artist, I cannot share my professional work because they are subject to confidentiality contracts, so I have shared only some pieces of my freelance work with the previous authorization of my clients. I try to maintain and update my personal portfolio making one or two concepts new per month.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Julian

Diego Velazquez, the Spanish painter, is a Renaissance artist who I admire for the awesome technical level of his pieces. Ralph McQuarrie is the best digital artist in history for me, I really admire his talent for creating new worlds, characters, and environments in the entire saga of Star Wars. Dylan Cole because he has an amazing technical level.
