Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Joaquin

Hi, my name is Joaquin, and I’m a 3D artist based in Montevideo, Uruguay. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of creating believable digital humans. In my early years I remember my father doing portraits of my family which inspired me to be the artist that I am today.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Joaquin

Something that I like to do in all my personal work is experiment with new workflows, this wasn’t an exception. I did all the modeling from beginning to final inside ZBrush – the sketching, Zmodeling, assets, cloth, and even the retopology, it was a lot of fun. This idea came out after doing a likeness sketch which ended up having a similarity to the actor Wesley Snipes, so the best idea was creating the iconic fictional character from the 90s.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Joaquin

For me, creating a believable digital human is always a challenge – I’m always seeking new ways to make it look closer to "realistic" but having the freedom to break some rules if that helps the design. I learned a bunch of new tricks in the way of creating skin materials and

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Joaquin

I always use ZBrush either in my personal work or professional. For the textures my tool of preference is Substance Painter, and for the final presentation it is Maya and Arnold or Unreal Engine, which I’m using more often lately since this is the future of our industry.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Joaquin

I always try to learn something new from each new project in order keep me motivated to continue learning. My best advice is always to challenge yourself in each new project either personal or professional.

Are you a member of any social media groups? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

Joaquin

Sure, Facebook, Instagram, ZBrush Central, 3dtotal, and the list continues, I basically gather references from those platforms which keep me motivated to continue working. For hashtags, the best is 3Dart or CGart, you can find great inspiration there.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Joaquin

Create art that inspired and encourage others to create digital humans or 3d art in general, share my knowledge as much as I can with the community. I’d love to contribute to other areas that can help to change people's lives, like creating prosthetics to helps those who really need it.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Joaquin

More digital humans! Also, I am working on a series of tutorials that I am planning to launch next year. You will see more real-time characters that I am still experimenting with and learning, trying to achieve the same result as the offline render.
