November gallery award winner for his Norse character, Gilberto Magno, shares more of his work and talks about his inspirations...

Norse by Gilberto Magno won the November character category with 770 points. His inspiration came from a concept by MinSoo Kim, which he then converted to 3D using ZBrush and Maya. Find out more about this Brazilian artist below...

3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Gilberto Magno: My name is Gilberto Magno; I'm 31, from Brazil and live in São Paulo city. I have worked as a 3D artist for the game industry and in advertising for nearly 8 years. Now I'm working as a 3D character artist freelance, and giving workshops about creating characters for games.

I did this character in spare time inspired by the art of League of Legends. Main concept by Paul Kwon

3dt: Tell us the story behind your recent gallery entry, Norse: What inspired you to create it?
GB: For a long time I wanted to make a medieval character. When I saw Norse by MinSoo Kim, I loved the design of the armor, and of course the same I can be said about the beautiful Norse girl.

3dt: What software did you use and do you have any tips for using this software, or any other software that you use to create your art in general?
GB: Usually I start my work in ZBrush because you have more freedom to do overall shapes and silhouettes faster. After, I cleaned the topology using the modeling toolkit from Maya and came back to ZBrush to make the final details.

3dt: Would you consider yourself to have a particular signature style, or techniques that you use often?
GB: I don't think I have a particular signature style yet but I guess I'm creating one. I always do some concepting first; I capture the message from the conceptual artist and apply the techniques to my work. I give emphasis to the values and silhouette to create a great character design.

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?
GB: I don't think one specific software, I will need to learn what is necessary.

I did this work for a 3D Fan Art Challenge, and I used only ZBrush and Photoshop for my final composition.

3dt: How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?
GB: I don't like to be doing the same things; I always try to challenge myself, so the way my portfolio will develop is a mystery even to me. I have been very influenced by other styles like Darksiders' style, Diablo, World of Warcraft and many Korean artists.

3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?
GB: Many artists inspire me, like Joe Mad, Dean Holdeen, LD Austin, Paul Kwon, Adrian Smith, and MinSoo Kim among others. In traditional sculpture, Michelangelo, Simon Lee, Aris Kolokontes, Jose Ismael, Jordu Schell, Cicero Davila, Alex Oliver and so on. In 3D, I have a lot of inspirations too, like Kris Costa, Vadim Bakhlychev, Tamara Bakhlycheva, Bogdan Gabelko, Raphael Grassetti, Bruno Câmara and Frank Tzeng.

3dt: How do you like to unwind after a hard day's (or night's) work?
GB: Usually I watch a good movie or play a game that I like. I don't like to leave home.

3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?
GB: Surprise... I'm joking in parts because I always choose concepts that challenge me.

I love the art of the Angers (MinSoo Kim) so I decided to do a fan art about his work

3dt: If you could choose any superhero power, what would you take?
GB: Would like to be an angel with powers without limits, like Tyrael from Diablo, destroying many of the demons around the world, haha...
