August cartoon gallery award winner, Antone Magdy, reveals his artistic inspirations and underlying workflow behind his Team Fortress fan art...

Antone Magdy's Team Fortress fan art won the 3dtotal gallery prize in the cartoon category for August, with 483 points. Created as a Game Artist Academy assignment, Antone always looking for ways to improve took the image further in his spare time to get the most out of it. 3dtotal caught up with him to find out more...

3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?
Antone Magdy: I am Antone Magdy, a 3D character artist from Egypt. I make both high- and low-poly characters, and I currently do cartoon and stylized characters due to my current position in a studio that makes a cartoon TV series.

3dt: Tell us the story behind your recent gallery entry: What inspired you to create it?
AM: Well it all started as a sculpting assignment for Game Artist Academy and I decided to take it further and get the most out of it, learning more about Marmoset shading/lighting along the way. I also wanted to use Substance Designer for the first time... it turned out very well , until this moment I still can't believe that people really like it though!

3dt: What software did you use and do you have any tips for using this software, or any other software that you use to create your art in general?
AM: I used Maya for the base modeling, ZBrush for the sculpting, Mudbox for texturing, xNormal for baking, Substance Designer for combining the maps and final touches, and finally, Marmoset Toolbag for rendering. Usually I use 3ds Max for modeling, but since it was a learning experience, I thought about trying Maya to learn more about it... I always think of the software as a tool, nothing more, so whatever gets the job done is the one I use.

3dt: Would you consider yourself to have a particular signature style, or techniques that you use often?
AM: Well yeah, I think that everyone tends to add a bit of his soul into his art which leads to a sort of signature in every piece, and hopefully my artwork shows a bit of that.

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?
AM: Actually, I want to learn a lot! Heh! But lately I have been thinking that I would love to learn more about MODO, as I have seen a lot of great stuff done with it the renders are especially very cool.

3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?
AM: For traditional artists: the amazing Bernini and Michelangelo I can`t get enough of viewing their amazing sculptures! There are also a lot of modern sculptors who are amazing, yet I'm not good with names so forgive me. For digital artists, I really like the art done by Kris Costa (aka Antropus) he is an amazing artist and very friendly (took a class with him). Also, Alessandro Baldasseroni is a great character artist I'm always exited to see his new work from him and others like Grassetti, Pedro Conti, Bruno Camara, Mariano Steiner, Anthony Jones, Danny Williams, Tiago Hoisel... I can't really name them all, but all of them have that passion and spark that make you love seeing their art.

3dt: How do you like to unwind after a hard day's (or night's) work?
AM: You know you have a great job when doing some personal art at home makes you feel good, plus definitely playing some PS3/4 games, or playing some soccer as well this is my recipe to forget a hard day.

3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?
AM: Currently I'm working on a new character with a different style; so far I'm having fun learning new stuff and hopefully you will enjoy it.

3dt: If you could choose any superhero power, what would you take?
AM: Hmmm, time freeze I could use a little bit of extra time!
