Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Fagner Alves

My name is Fagner, I'm 29 years old, and I live in Brazil. I studied graphic design at Centro Universitário Belas Artes in São Paulo, where I spent four good years of my life. I worked as graphic designer for a short time, because as soon as I finished college I decided to follow the paths of concept art and illustration, which are the areas in which I enjoy working.

What was the workflow behind your last portfolio image? Where did the idea come from?

Fagner Alves

My latest art piece for my portfolio is called Gray Ghosts Stone Temple and I can say that its production flow was very intense. This piece is a scenario with three perspective points and its production began with many sketches and thumbnails. After deciding the path to follow I started the digital painting process, finishing with the review.

The idea for this piece came from one of my passions, which are videogames. One of the most appreciated is Dark Souls, with their scenarios, character design, varied moods and ambiences. The whole plot of the game with its mysteries, challenges, discoveries and subjective interpretations make me curious and excited to improve my work until I reach this level of production, or at least try.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Fagner Alves

For Gray Ghosts Stone Temple I tried to represent the moment the player discovers a new area in a game. My challenge was to leave the image at an angle that would pass this sensation on to people. The piece was developed based on the perspective of 3 points, bringing a view from the bottom up, seeking to give greater depth to the environment and greatness to the scene.

Without a doubt the creation process is also an apprenticeship, which starts with the research by references and is maintained until the final revision. Each piece developed requires greater attention in a certain aspect and with this was no different. I needed to be more attentive with scales from the elements of the scene, but the biggest challenge was the perspective because it must be at least believable and sometimes this is not so easy to achieve during production.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Fagner Alves

Depending on the need I use Paint Tool Sai and Adobe Illustrator, but it is something rare to happen because Photoshop provides almost all the tools and resources that I need to make my pieces, it is the software that I use most in my creations.

Paint Tool Sai is also a great tool for digital painting, however, it does not feature all the features I usually use in my creative processes, and Illustrator, to me, is a secondary software because I do not usually produce vector art.

That said, my tips for boosting the portfolio are: keep a routine of study and practice, seek inspiration in what you like, and don’t be limited to the trends of the moment.

How do you keep your portfolio up to date? Any tips?

Fagner Alves

To keep my portfolio up to date I try to have good ideas for projects and series, and I seek to publish new pieces at scheduled intervals. Parallel to this, I continue to study the fundamentals of digital painting and drawing, which help a lot during production and increase the quality of the pieces presented.

I have a habit of watching, playing, and reading a lot and these are my main sources of inspiration, besides the artists that I admire and follow. That said, my tips for boosting the portfolio are: keep a routine of study and practice, seek inspiration in what you like, and don’t be limited to the trends of the moment.

Are you a member of any social media group? Any favorite hashtags that you check daily?

Fagner Alves

I am a member of some art groups on Facebook, among them are: Illustradores Brazil, Concept Art & Game Design, Bate Papo Ilustrado, and Canal Brush Rush. They all aim to promote a greater interaction between illustrators, concept artists, designers, animators, programmers, among others, or just art lovers. They are also interesting to show your pieces and get feedback from other artists. They are channels for the exchange of experience, tips, criticisms, and suggestions. I was not in the habit of following hashtags, but lately I've been following a few. The most viewed are: conceptart, games, and illustration.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Fagner Alves

My greatest artistic ambition is to work as a character design and illustrator, focusing on games, movies, and animations. In order to achieve this goal, I seek to evolve my technical and creative skills, and thus, be able to represent the ideas that I have in a more credible way for the people who accompany my work. With that I believe that I would reach my goals in the artistic area that I choose to follow, where the imagination has no limits.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Fagner Alves

I really like the work of traditional artists, but my favorites are the digital ones. I have this preference because digital artists can reach a larger audience, especially by the ease of disseminating their work in the different medias, making their pieces spread faster. In addition, they can simulate almost all traditional tools and develop new techniques with greater agility.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Fagner Alves

I have many ideas for my next portfolio pieces, but two in particular will have priority in the production. The first is to create more complete Illustrations of one of the collections of character design that I produced recently, where I want to show the characters interacting with each other and with the environment.

The second idea is to continue the creation of scenarios/environments inspired by games, always producing different thumbnails to help in the development of ideas and the creation of new projects. After completing these works I want to create another series of character design, but this idea is still under study.
