3dtotal: Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Daniel D'Avila: My name is Daniel D'Avila. I'm a generalist 2D/3D artist and I have my own studio based in Sao Paulo/Brazil, focused on the advertising industry.

3dt: Where did you find the inspiration for your latest gallery entry? What's the story behind its creation?

DD: During our ever-busy routine in the studio it's difficult to dedicate myself to personal projects. But in this case, I was hooked by the 2D concept of Spanish artist, The Dulk, so I manage to make it in 3D during a second shift after work. As a generalist artist I'm always trying to experiment with new techniques and visuals, therefore this surrealist scene was a great opportunity to practice, and also a very refreshing experience.

3dt: What software and plug-ins did you use to create this image? Did you face any difficulties, and how did you overcome them?

DD: I basically used ZBrush, MODO and Photoshop. The image itself has a considerable amount of detail, however the most complicated part was accurately translating the way 2D shapes would look in 3D. But with handy tools like ZRemesher to build my base meshes, and ZBrush itself, the workflow was pretty smooth.

3dt: Do you normally use this software in your workflow? What other software and plug-ins do you favor?

DD: Yes, those are my main tools in my daily workflow. But according to the project I can also take advantage of MARI and Marvelous Designer.

3dt: Are there any particular techniques that you use often? Or do you like to experiment?

DD: As I mention before I'm always trying to push my limits, consequently learning new tools is a good way to optimize my workflow. In my opinion moving out of the comfort zone is mandatory for a successful career. It's also a demonstration of humbleness since it's always important to evolve as an artist.

3dt: What are your artistic ambitions?

DD: I think one of the main ambitions an artist can have is to achieve worldwide recognition and so that's mine!

3dt: What software would you like to learn in the future to expand your portfolio and skillset, and why?

DD: I'm planning to learn new render engines such as Corona and Octane. I've been watching some great images produced with these software, and it can be very useful regarding render time and realistic results.

3dt: How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

DD: I consider it very important for artists to experiment their skills on personal projects, and not only on commissioned work. It's a very loose way to enhance and discover new abilities.

3dt: Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

DD: It's hard to list just a few of them because it's a pretty long list. But I'm a big fan of Moebius and his detailed strokes. Norman Rockwell and his legacy of phenomenal paintings. And Gonzalo Carcamo and his watercolour masterpieces. Just to name a few.

3dt: What can we expect to see from you next?

DD: That's unpredictable! Simply because I try not get attached to a single subject. As long as future works can inspire other people that's fine for me.
