Artist Journey: digital sculptor Vahid Ahmadi

“There is no time to tell myself this is it and I’ve made it, because at the end of every work I know I’ve made some mistake and I need to correct it, but I always enjoy the process.” Check out digital sculptor Vahid Ahmadi’s artistic journey so far…

Thank you for sharing your journey so far with our readers. Let’s begin: please introduce yourself and let us know how long ago your journey started? What drew you to art? Any early influences?

Vahid

Well, thanks a lot for having me. I'm Vahid Ahmadi, it’s not very long since I started 3D art. It’s about 6 years since I started this journey, and I'm pretty satisfied with that. my work before this was as a software employee at different companies which left me very unhappy, but one day I told myself you know what, let's do what I love, and I started this journey, and I've been working on it with passion ever since.

Do you still have any early artwork? We’d love to see your early work, be they digital or traditional. How do you feel about these works now?

Vahid

Well, I'm working on a couple of more new stuff and some workshops for the powerful CG school yiihuu.com. Sadly none of them are finished and I will share them later when they are finished with pleasure.  And they are digital. Whatever I make I don’t dwell on it whether they are good or not I just proceed to learn more and more and there are always some flaws that I need to refine. What I feel is not relevant. While creating something, there is always much more to do and learn.

What training or learning did you do in those beginning stages? Could you see your progression?

Vahid

I always watch new tutorials from the best mentors, and I try to boost my work and pipeline. I watch mostly tutors from the websites such as yiihuu.cc, and there are great mentors to learn from them. I use pretty much every famous website to learn something new and make better works. Recently I started learning Maya, Substance, and Mari for different purposes. There is so much to learn right now – I'm currently boosting my grooming skills in Xgen as well.

Can we see some of your progression artwork? Where did you think you were improving? And where did you need to improve upon?

Vahid

Yes, I attach one here – it’s still in early stages and needs a huge amount of improvement. I did the cloth using Marvelous Designer and ZBrush. I used Polypaint in ZBrush for the dragon picture, and by the way, it’s based on a concept by Choong Yeol Lee, and special thanks to him. It’s going to be finished soon. I need to tweak the pose, cloth, armor, and so on.

Were you always happy with what you produced, or was there a turning point where you thought; “This is it, I’ve made it!”?

Vahid

No there was not. There are sometimes moments I am happy with what I have done, and sometimes I feel terrible with the result. But I always love one thing, which is moving on and doing more and more, and learning new stuff and new tools. There is no time to tell myself this is it and I’ve made it, because at the end of every work I know I’ve made some mistake and I need to correct it, but I always enjoy the process.

Which piece are you most proud of, and why?

Vahid

To be honest with you none of them because I always feel there is still so much to do and I still have to improve my skills in every aspect of my work. There were certain times that I enjoyed some them for a very, very short amount of time, and I never stop at any feeling. I don’t think you should dwell on the feeling of winning or losing, and instead focus on perpetuating and doing more and more, and keeping this state of feeling, because whatever we make there is always something new, and new people that step into the industry, and because of that we never have to stop, and of course that is my personal perspective.

What are you still working on improving (if anything) - or have you reached a point of high consistency? Do you have any tips for keeping it fresh?

Vahid

I’m working on anatomy and grooming hair and texturing. For texturing we must look at many references and try to keep the texturing process simple, like 2D painters do, and try not to make mistakes. In order to tweak anatomy or groom, we need to make many mistakes to learn, and ask for help from other people who are masters at this and watch new tutorials and read certain books about art, or pick up very good books from 3dtotal, in order to keep it fresh. We need to do new and more difficult projects to keep it fresh.

What advice would you give to any of our readers who are just beginning their journey now?

Vahid

In my humble opinion, the first and last factor is patience because it takes a lot of work and learning to be a really good 3D artist, and there are no shortcuts. I think a 3D artist must be as tough as athletes, real champions, because it takes so much energy to make a good project, and sometimes we fail, but as 3D artists we need to be very tough and consistent. But for starters I would say “Man! It’s really fun, and you could inspire other people too!”

What can we expect to see from you next?

Vahid

I think the first project is going to be a very nice workshop for yiihuu.com, and I am working on multiple projects at the same time which I will share later. And in the mean time special thanks to 3dtotal, a great and inspiring team, it’s always great and refreshing to see your website and again thanks a lot for having me.
