Thank you for sharing your journey so far with our readers. Let’s begin: please introduce yourself and let us know how long ago your journey started? What drew you to art? Any early influences?

Waynewan

Hi, I’m Waynewan from Shenzhen, China. I started my career after I graduated in 2006, with 3D animation as my principal job at that time. I have a huge passion for drawing ever since I was a child, so I decided to start it as my career. In the early years I was influenced by the CG game art from Fantasy VIII, Resident Evil, and World of Warcraft .

Do you still have any early artwork? We’d love to see your early work, be they digital or traditional. How do you feel about these works now?

Waynewan

Here is one of my early artworks in 3D. Although I feel deeply inadequate about my abilities then, looking back now, it’s still a good example of my preceding art level.

Can we see some of your progression artwork? Where did you think you were improving? And where did you need to improve upon?

Waynewan

In the beginning I tried a variety of art styles, including my skills in modeling and texturing to improve myself all-round. I started to find progress in my work “EVA,” and better development in  “Cool boy.” I can see my step by step progress in each of my artworks. (I participated in the interior competition for Tencent and I had a chance to win the first prize in 3D).

I can find that I’ve made an improvement in my anatomy skills and the rendering skills from these two works. For sure I still have a lot to improve. I can be told that the make up for the female character should be more vivid and closer to the reality of skin. (Though we didn’t have XYZ displacement skills at that time). Also, the hair expression should be more natural in order to create a better result.

Were you always happy with what you produced, or was there a turning point where you thought; “This is it, I’ve made it!”?

Waynewan

For sure I had tried my best every time I did my personal art work, until I was satisfied about it. It was not only for my self-perfection but when I take a look back at my works afterwards, I can tell that I’m not regretful about it .

Which piece are you most proud of, and why?

Waynewan

JOJO is the work that I prefer the most, because she’s really pretty in my opinion and I’ve earned awards on many international websites, ZBrushCentral included, so I’m quite proud of that.

What are you still working on improving (if anything) - or have you reached a point of high consistency? Do you have any tips for keeping it fresh?

Waynewan

As the old saying goes “Live and learn,” you should never stop pursuing  a higher altitude. Try to find and learn from the great artworks, improve your self-inspiration. And keep your eyes on the new technologies and the new trends. What’s more, keep yourself challenged in each of your personal work so that you can improve your sense of personal achievement.

What advice would you give to any of our readers who are just beginning their journey now?

Waynewan

Just try to learn more and practice more while watching more tutorials. It will be helpful if you can find someone to improve with. You can also find yourself a masterclass if time and money permits. The most important thing is that you must spend your time to do your own work because sometimes you can’t improve yourself completely in a project, so making progress on your own is necessary.

Sometimes learning is just like climbing a mountain; the harder you try to achieve, the better the view, but also sometimes you will have a higher one to conquer so remember that you should never give up.
