Tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you, what do you do, and where are you located?

Akshay

Hey guys, my name is Akshay Jain from India. Many thanks to 3dtotal for giving me this opportunity to express myself as an artist. I am a 3D character artist for collectibles and games. I’m currently working as a freelance artist and Ghost Rider is my latest work. I am currently working on two more projects for collectible commissions.

What was the workflow behind your latest gallery image? Where did the idea come from?

Akshay

This Ghost Rider piece is a commission project I did for my client and I got a rough sketch, but afterwards all the research and development behind the sketch was mine.

I did R&D on Western culture cowboy dressings and horse anatomy, which was challenging.

The workflow I kept as simple as possible. I started out with blocking everything and afterwards, starting from the top, did detail as per the reference I collected, and stayed true to the concept for the feel. Just enough detail to look good when printed. The whole piece was manually sculpted, and I used tileable alphas for textures on clothes.

What challenges did the image present? Did you learn something new?

Akshay

Well to be honest this is the first time I did something big like this, and with multiple elements both organic and inorganic. So the whole piece was challenging in terms of posing, horse anatomy, and also posing the horse. The character story is also established in an old timeline so I had to give damage and wear and tear - also the character feel was important as he is a Ghost Rider, so has to show a relationship between both Carter Slade and his Horse.

I learned a lot of new things and expand my research area while also kicking out my laziness! Plus I also have to stay on the path where my client requirements are met, but my client gave me all the freedom to bring this piece to life.

Do you use any other software, either for work or personal projects?

Akshay

I mainly use ZBrush as ZBrush is love, and mostly I do character development and collectibles work. I use Maya for blocking things out and then take the whole thing into ZBrush where I do whatever I want with that mesh. For unwrapping and retopology purpose I mainly use Maya, both for my personal work and client work.

How do you keep your portfolio up-to-date? Any tips?

Akshay

I don’t have any trick to be honest to keep my work up to date. The only thing that matters is work regularly on a daily basis. Either it is theoretical or practically applying that theory knowledge in software. The key is to not waste a single day oozing around. I used to be lazy but I am not anymore. I practice every day on my sculpting techniques, try to learn new things.

The main thing for me is anatomy and I study every day. Even if I am not working I reach out on social media platforms to look at other great artists’ work to inspire myself, and I also observe things in daily life to keep my mind library working and entering data in it. You should have a visual library of your own. Plus everybody has their own pace of work so keep at it guys.

What are your artistic ambitions?

Akshay

I don’t have any specific ambitions honestly. I thought in the past that I want my work featured on 3dtotal and ZBrushCentral, and here I am expressing myself on your platform and I got an excellence award from your website which is a great deal for me.

I got my work selected in the top row on ZBrushCentral which was my dream when I was just a student. The only thing I want now is to work like this and keep upscaling my quality. I believe in quality over quantity, so work hard and things will surely fall into your lap.

Who are your favorite artists, traditional or digital, and can you explain why?

Akshay

Oh yes there are many great artists out there in the art community, from whom I am getting inspired every day. I like the work of Daniel Bel, Gurjeet Singh, Adam Fisher,

Gerard Kravchuk, Rodrigue Prailer, Andre Yamaguchi, Rafael Grassetti, and many more. These guys have their own style and approach towards work and characters.

They have a unique feel in their work and these guys are beasts.

What can we expect to see from you next?

Akshay
