This scene was created for the 2006 Blizzard Art Contest. Modeling was done in Maya with sculpting and detailing done in Mudbox. The background is a 2d digital matte painting. Texturing was done in Photoshop and Bodypaint and the final render was done with Mental Ray. I used Photoshop to composite the final image. Some of my inspirations with this piece are obviously Warcraft, but I found a lot of inspiration from the Lord of the Rings movies.
