Staff pick contest May 2019

Toni Bratincevic had his work cut out for him to choose just one winner from the array of great submissions in May 2019. But choose he must! Deceiver by Gregory Callahan showed a great sense of story and history between the two characters, as well as being a worthy sculpt! The runners-up were Marko Ivanovic, Yago de Amorim Dias, Hidehisa Miyagawa, and masierrap.

Winning entry - Deceiver

The Deceiver is the guy you've been warned about — intriguing but clearly untrustworthy. The portrait was designed to be full of gritty detail and symbolism. I spent a few years on this piece on and off. The overall look evolved but the message has always stayed the same "The pride of your heart has deceived you."

I really enjoyed character sculpt from Gregory Callahan. What I like about it is that both characters resonate with strong and unique personality. I felt like there is a history of relationship between these two characters and you can tell that there is something shady going on here. There is a story to it, that's why I think it is my favorite work from these 5 top selected artworks. Technically, sculpt is well executed, details and main forms are strong. Small creature has a great pose which creates a nice silhouette. Even after looking at this work for the last 5 minutes, I am still finding interesting details, which tells me that Gregory put a lot of thinking behind this project. I would love to see this sculpt fully realized with materials/textures and some environment behind it, to give it more broader context, that would probably take this experience to another level.

Gregory's prize box this month included:

  • The Sketchbook of Loish
  • The Artist's Guide to the Anatomy of the Human Head
